| Après avoir quitté Tahiti pour rejoindre Santiago du Chili, Moz a enchaîné directement sur Antofagasta, jolie vague Chilienne pour un GQS 6 Stars doté de 40.000$ de prix. Avant la grosse épreuve Grand Slam d'Arica (Chili) qui va commencer dans quelques jours. | En quittant Papeete où il a eu l'occasion de profiter en free-surf d'une houle divine, l'envie de scorer lui chatouillait les palmes après son résultat décevant au GQS Port Macquarie Festival (Australie). " Je devais faire un résultat, pour reprendre confiance et pour marquer mon territoire. D'autant que le tableau était tout à fait accessible," commentait Amaury en quittant Papeete avec Yoan Florantin. Le Team Reunion comptait quatre riders pour cette compétition GQS: Charly Chapelet, Pierre Barthelier, Yoan Florantin et Moz. Antofagasta est une ville au Nord du Chili, au Sud d'Iquique et d'Arica, mais c'est la première fois que tour IBA vient y faire escale. Une vague consistante, choisie pour sa régularité par l'IBA, La Cupula appelée encore El Poder Domo ( traduisez Le Dome Pouvoir) a permis à Amaury d'exprimer sa suprématie et son appétit de victoire à loisir. Après avoir sorti son "frère" Dave Hubbard l'Hawaïen en demi-finale (15,10 pts à 14,37 pts), Amaury s'est offert la finale. "L'ambiance au Chili est superbe, le public très nombreux, motivé et très respectueux. Le niveau du contest a permis de voir de belles séries tout en gardant une bonne ambiance. C'était excitant de me trouver en finale contre le local Alan Munoz : le public espérait sa victoire mais moi je voulais la mienne..." |
In QF 1, 2008 IBA World Champ Uri Valadao (Brazil) proved too strong for Joe Clarke (Aust). QF2 was a hard-hitting affair with Chilean rider Alan Munoz taking on another former IBA world Champ Damian King (Aust). This was a tight fight to the finish with Munoz getting the nod with ballistic combo’s in the pocket. QF 3 was a all French affair with the Master Amaury Lavernhe and his apprentice Pierre Bathelier putting on a show for the now massive crowd. Bathelier was in devastating form leading into the quarters blowing minds with soaring inverts and air reverses, but whatever he did in the heat Amaury had the answers for. In the end the experience of the 2010 World Champion proved too strong and Pierre was relegated to the sidelines. QF4 saw the last of the Aussies Nick Ormerod knocked out by Hawaïan Dave Hubbard. The waves during this quarter final went inconsistent and not a lot of highlight came for the 30 minute heat apart from a bomb left the Hubbard destroyed all the way to shore. By this time the sleepy town of Antofagasta had woken up and thousands of locals converged to witness history in the making at their local beach. IBA World Tour manager Terry McKenna was amazed at the passion of the locals. "It was like a World Cup football match” said Terry Mckenna. |

Et le public n'a pourtant pas été déçu car Munoz s'est bien battu au début de la série avec deux vagues consécutives à 6,67 et 5,27 pts. Amaury avait quant à lui 5,10 et 6,43 pts au compteur au premier tiers de la série. Les vagues se sont espacées et dès la première vague banquable Moz a réussi une vague 7,83 passant à 14,26 pts contre 13,94 pts à 10 minutes de la fin. Alan Munoz n'a pas pu rattraper son retard, surtout dans les cinq dernières minutes où Amaury avec une vague magnifique à 9,10 pts a mis le Chilien "combo" c'est à dire distancé de plus de 10 points, donc hors jeu pour des dernières minutes. Mais beau joueur, Alan Munoz a tenté une jolie dernière vague à 7,33 pts deux minutes avant le gong, histoire de laisser le public chilien l'applaudir une dernière fois et de s'incliner avec panache. Amaury a été ovationné et assailli par les médias locaux, il est en effet très populaire en Amérique Latine, d'abord par ses performances et ses podiums au Péru et au Chili mais surtout car il est le seul non-latino du Tour mondial à parler parfaitement espagnol. |
Into the semi’s and the surf started to surge with some glassy 6 footers providing the perfect canvas for the competitors to get creative and draw some fresh lines into the pitching lips. Semi Final 1 – Uri VS Munoz - with both in blistering form. They went wave for wave until the dying seconds when Munoz consolidated with a crazy combo that sent the crowd frantic. Semi Final 2 – Hubbard VS Amaury Amaury dominated the first 20 minutes of this 30-minute semi with smart wave selection and perfect lines into the lip. But when Dubb is on the back foot he just goes for it and his fighting spirit kicked in with an 8.23 average for 2 high speed ARS’s on a set. He searched for the wave he needed till the final second, but Mother Nature would not deliver. Between the semi’s and final the crowd were treated to the IBA Expression session, a 20 minute expose’ of new school riding. The French excitement machine Pierre Bathelier took the US$100 prize by busting a huge ARS off the end bowl that left the crowd speechless. |
